Proposed Calming Plans

A residents' committee of Hastings-Sunrise North, the Dundas Street Group, have been attending various Collectors workshops, meeting with members of the surrounding community, and developing a preliminary traffic calming plan for Dundas Street (see below). The last residents' meeting was on Sep. 14, 2011.

Collectors Toolkit

The Collectors Toolkit contains a list of the possible techniques that may be employed to reduce speed and increase safety on streets in Vancouver designated to be "collectors". A collector is a new street type designation, somewhere between a residential street and a secondary arterial. It is primarily intended to provide access for residents between their residential streets and the nearest secondary arterials.

For details on the Collectors Toolkit, see the report (1.2Mb/PDF) that was submitted to City Council.

The following offers a series of examples of traffic calming from around the Vancouver area.

The Toolkit was developed by the City in consultations between residents living near or on newly designated collectors, and traffic engineers. It contains the following list of available techniques:

Two other techniques are still under consideration:

As well, under other existing City plans, the following techniques may be considered:

  • Crosswalks
  • Pedestrian-controlled walk traffic signals
  • 4-way stop signs
  • Sidewalk in-fill
  • Speed-display boards (e.g. SpeedWatch)

Specifically NOT allowed in the calming of collectors:

  • Traffic diverters (e.g. right-only at intersections)
  • Vertical deflections (e.g. speed bumps)
